Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens, better known as Queen Latifah in America, is an actress and rapper. Her career as a musician, film and TV artist has garnered an impressive the distinction of two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also received a Grammy Award as well as six additional Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah's parents were Lancelot and Rita Owens. They were both Police officers. Rita was a Newark New Jersey teacher who worked at Irvington High School. Latifah's mother and father split after Latifah was ten years old. Latifah was born and was raised within Newark New Jersey attended Catholic schools in Newark. Latifah was her stage name before she reached the age of eight. The word means extremely sensitive in Arabic. Always a tall girl her height of 5'10 inches Latifah was a forward for the basketball team at her high school. In a school production, she sang Home from The Wiz. Latifah first began to beatbox for the Ladies Fresh. Latifah was among the members of the original version of the Flavor Unit which at that time was a crew composed of MCs and producers led by DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka DJ Mark the 45 King, recorded an audition recording of Queen Latifah's song Princess of the Posse. The recording was given to Yo! MTV Raps which is hosted by Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music has signed Latifah after hearing the song. She released her first single Wrath of My Madness, in 1988.
